Tuhfat al-Fuqaha is a famous text in Hanafi fiqh, written by the distinguished Central Asian jurist, ‘Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abu Ahmad `Ala’ al-Din al-Samarqandi (rah), (d. 539).
As the author states in the introduction, the work was intended to supplement, elaborate, and elucidate the highly popular legal compendium known as the Mukhtasar of al-Quduri.
The work represents a distinct advance in methodical arrangement and terminological refinement over Quduri’s text. Al-Samarqandi is also the father-in-law of the celebrated Hanafi jurist, ‘Ala’ al-Din al-Kasani (d. 587), who composed a commentary on the Tuhfat.
The author’s daughter Fatimah bint Muhammad ibn Ahmad was a Faqihah (woman-scholar of Islamic Jurisprudence) of her time. She used to issue fatwa and had memorised this book ‘Tuhfat al Fuqaha’.
